ABSTRACT
Onattukara sandy plains have low nutrient and water retention capacity. The sole application of chemical fertilizers can lead to leaching loss of major portion of applied fertilizers in this soil. Hence the application of chemical fertilizers in organic matrix entrapped form in this area is a ecologically sound alternative to reduce the leaching loss of the soluble fertilizer. This organic matrix entrapped fertilizer can act as a slow release fertilizer and nutrients will be available to the crop at its critical growth stages. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of organic matrix based slow release fertilizer on growth and yield of tomato in Onattukara sandy plains. The organic matrix developed out of agro waste materials itself can act as a source of nutrient and it is relatively cheaper compared to synthetic matrix based slow release fertilizers. The study revealed that the organic matrix based slow release NPK fertilizers are capable of enhancing the growth, yield and quality parameters of tomato. The highest yield and NPK uptake was reported in T9 in which 50% recommended dose of fertilizer was entrapped in organic matrix and applied in two splits. This proved that the 50% of the recommended dose was enough for the better growth, yield and quality of crop if they are supplied according to the crop requirement at critical growth stages. Cost of fertilizer and fertilizer load per unit area can be reduced by the entrapment of fertilizers in organic matrices. The investigation revealed that the organic matrix based fertilizers is a promising low cost technology to enhance the nutrient use efficiency and yield of tomato in Onattukara sandy plains.
