ABSTRACT
The investigation entitled “Effect of potassium permanganate (KMnO4) on shelf life of mango fruits cv. Alphonso.” was undertaken in the Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture, Dapoli during May to July, 2012. Experiment was conducted in Completely Randomised Design with treatment T1 – KMnO4 (1gm) + dry saw dust (fine layer), T2 – KMnO4 (1gm) + wet saw dust (fine layer), T3 – KMnO4 (1gm) and T4 – Control. The Alphonso mango fruits were harvested in the month of April-May with 85% maturity and utilized for ripening study at ambient temperature storage (24 to 290C, 65 to 78% RH) condition. Among different KMnO4 treatments, treatment T3 (KMnO4 1gm) recorded significantly delayed ripening by 3 days, lowest percentage of spoilage (17.77% stem end rot and 7.77% anthracnose) significantly lowest percentage of incidence of spongy tissue (1.11%) as compared to T4 (Control). It is concluded that KMnO4 treatment improves the shelf life of Alphonso mango fruits.
