ABSTRACT
An experiment was conducted at Main Horticultural Research and Extension Centre (MHREC), U.H.S, Bagalkot during kharif season 2014-15. Among the fifteen treatments, the sphagnum moss and cocopeat were found to be better rooting media for number of days taken for early root initiation (33.33 and 35.00 days respectively), days taken for transferring (85 days) of layers to polybags and per cent of rooted layers (37.00 and 35.00 out of 48 layers respectively).Number of leaves (12.33) and number of shoots (3.66) recorded higher in sphagnum moss. The root parameters like number of roots (8.17), number of secondary roots (6.67), length of primary roots (4.77 cm), longest length of primary root (6.00 cm), fresh (0.52 g) and Dry (0.36 g) root weight, plant height at 30 and 60 days (30.70 cm and 31.23 cm) respectively after transferring of layers to polybags and leaf area (5.07 cm2) was found to be maximum in coco peat which is on par with sphagnum moss. The coirpith recorded longest duration for root initiation and days taken for transferring to polybags and also recorded lesser number of primary, length, longest and diameter of primary roots.
