ABSTRACT
The effect of city sewage water irrigation on the soil properties and mulberry plant growth and yield was studied in the farmers field. Three gardens each with mulberry variety V1 and sewage water as source of irrigation water were selected from five villages which were compared against gardens using bore well water for irrigation from five different villages in the same Taluk. The study showed higher values for all the physico-chemical parameters and growth parameters studied in the sewage water irrigated gardens even though the farmers are not applying any chemical fertilizers as compared to the bore well water irrigated gardens. However, the heavy metals accumulation in the soil of sewage water irrigated gardens were significantly higher as compared to the bore well water irrigated gardens. The sewage water irrigated garden soils showed 207.7% Cu, 50.3% Zn, 417.5% Cd, 147.5% Pb and 406.6% Ni over the bore well water irrigated soils.
