ABSTRACT
Cultivation of mat-sedges (Cyperus tegetum R.) and its valuable products can play an important economic role. From the literature, preliminary survey and contact with the farmers at Sabong and Pingla block of West Midnapur district (Paschim Medinipur), West Bengal (Paschim Banga), India, where it is being widely cultivated mostly as mono-crop with poor management practices by the poor and marginal farmers, resulted poor returns. So, on the basis of this fact, a field experiment was conducted on during 2006 - 07 to 2007 - 08 at farmer's field at Bural under Sabong block area on clay loam soil. Excess rainwater during rainy season was conserved in excavated harvesting pond in adjacent of experimental area for subsequent use as life-saving irrigation by the crop. From the experiment it reveals that during kharif season, there was no significant difference observed in respect to dry mat-stick yield of mat-sedges in pooled data. However, during winter and summer season, W6 treatment (W3 + paddy straw mulching during winter and summer season, respectively) exhibited higher dry mat-stick yield (2.249 and 3.353 t ha-1) (pooled data), respectively. Consumptive use of water by mat-sedges was found to be highest [(422.3 and 433.3 mm during 2007 and 2008, respectively during summer season), (351.7 and 363.6 mm during 2006 – 07 and 2007 – 08, respectively during winter season)] with the treatment W4.
