ABSTRACT
In Karnataka the sandy light textured soils exhibit poor nutrient status especially micronutrients such as zinc (Zn) and Boron (B) due to leaching of these nutrients and low organic matter status of the soil. In order to study the effect of zinc and boron on availability of zinc and boron at different growth sates to groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L) for their better growth and development. An attempt has been made in the present investigation on sandy loam soil (Typic Haplustalf) with deficient in available zinc (0.46 mg kg-1) and boron (0.43 mg kg-1) soil of Shivamogga (Karnataka). Results of the investigation showed that DTPA-Zn status in soil was not affected by application of borax @ 5 kg ha-1. Whereas, application of zinc sulphate at three levels (zero to 20 kg ha-1) with or without borax significantly increased the DTPA-Zn from 0.49 to 1.01 mg kg-1 at 30 days after sowing of groundnut. At the time of harvest crop, a significant increase in the DTPA-Zn status in soil was noticed due to the application of zinc suphate. But, the level of DTPA-Zn status in all the treatments was found to be relatively low compared to other two stages of crop growth. Further results indicate that an application of borax @ 5 kg ha-1 significantly increased the hot water extractable boron status in soil at 30 days after sowing (0.74 mg kg-1), 60 days after sowing (0.65 mg kg -1) and at harvest of the crop (0.38 mg kg-1) compared to those of control.
