ABSTRACT
Green gram (Vigna radiata L.) is an excellent source of high quality protein. During storage, pulse beetle Callosobruchus chinensis (Linn.) causes quantitative as well as qualitative losses in nutrition and germination that makes this pulse unfit for marketing as well as human consumption. The study was undertaken in view to minimize the infestation with eco-friendly manner. The experiment was carried out in laboratory condition at U.B. Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Cooch Behar, West Bengal during two consecutive years 2006 and 2007. Altogether, eight treatments namely neem oil (1 ml/100 g grains) (T1), mustard oil (1 ml/100 g grains) (T2), castor oil (1 ml/100 g grains) (T3), Neem oil (2 ml/100 g grains) (T4), mustard oil (2 ml/100 g grains) (T5), Castor oil (2 ml/100 g grains) (T6), naphthalene balls (1/4 /100 g grains) (T7) and bare grains (control) (T8) were taken. The grains were kept in open plastic jars to observe the pulse beetle attack. The experiment was laid out in a RBD design with four replications. Percent infestation and germination percentage were recorded at an interval of 30 days. Experiment showed that percent infestation was increase gradually. All the treatments showed significantly lower percentage of infestation over control. The naphthalene balls were found most effective against the pulse beetle infestation. After a prolonged period of treatment (150 days) a least damage (18.79%) was recorded from T7 while 62.89% infestation was recorded from the control. The germination percentage was recorded highest from T7 (87.90%), (87.44%), (81.96%), (77.35%) and (73.03%) at 30 days after treatment (DAT), 60 DAT, 90 DAT, 120 DAT and 150 DAT respectively which were significantly different from others.
