ABSTRACT
This research was done in Ambo town, to estimate women's economic contribution through their unpaid work. The research employed quantitative and qualitative research approach and both primary and secondary data were collected. Data were collected through face to face interview (scheduled interview and diary) and focus group discussion methods. Multistage sampling design was used. Ambo town was selected purposely and two kebeles were selected by simple random sampling techniques. A total of 56HH were selected by systematic random sampling and all individuals above 15 years within 56HH making a total of 172(89 male and 83 females) sample respondents for the study. Descriptive, inferential statistics and econometric analysis were employed to address the objectives of the study. Time use pattern of respondent indicated that in a particular day male devote 472.5 minute for paid work and 235.3 for unpaid work whereas, females devote 147.5 for paid and 719.2 for unpaid work with statistically significant difference between them and male dominate the world of paid work, and female the world of unpaid work. The econometric quantification of unpaid work based on specialist replacement cost method were employed and women's age 15 and above contribute $14.403 million through their unpaid to the town economy which were invisible and not included in SNA GDP. Ensuring equal distribution of resources and benefit, burdens of unpaid work, need for the measurement of unpaid work using time use statics were the most important prerequisite for planning, designing and implementation of any gender equality.
