ABSTRACT
Studies on genetic variability, correlation and path analysis for yield and yield contributing characters in chickpea was carried out at Rajoula, Research Farm, Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramodaya Vishwa Vidyalaya, Chitrakoot, Satna (MP) during rabi 2008-09 using Randomized Block Design with three replication. The study revealed that wider genetic variability with high heritability and high genetic advance as per cent of mean was recorded for number of harvest index, 100 seed weight and seed yield plant-1. Correlation studies revealed that seed yield was significantly and positively correlated with harvest index. Path coefficient analysis indicated that number of seeds pod-1, harvest index, number of branches plant-1 and dal recovery had high positive direct effect on seed yield signifying the importance of these traits in improvement of seed yield. Therefore, thus present study firmly suggests that chickpea improvement programme could be based on these characters as selection criteria.
