ABSTRACT
Ten drought tolerant accessions selected from minicore collections of chickpea were evaluated during rabi season of 2006-07 along with drought tolerant checks ICC 4958 and ICC 10448 and standared check Annigeri-1 under irrigated and rainfed condition for yield and traits related to drought tolerance. The genotypes, ICC 13124, ICC 1422 and ICC 2969 showed least reduction in dry mater production in root, leaves, stem, pods at flowering and podding stage under moistures stress. Among genotypes, ICC 13124, ICC 1422 and ICC 2969 showed least reduction, while ICC 1205 and ICC 11121 showed maximum reduction in leaf area (dm2) due to moistures stress compared to tolerant check ICC 4958. The genotype, ICC 12654 showed minimum difference for relative leaf water content (RLWC) while ICC 13124 recorded maximum difference for RLWC (%) between irrigated and moistures stress conditions. The cultivar ICC 13124 maintained highest yield under drought condition (990 kg ha) as well as irrigated condition (1220 kg/ha). Further, it had highest drought tolerance efficiency (72.46%), minimum drought susceptible index (0.76) and minimum reduction in yield (18.85%) due to moistures stress. It also maintained highest harvest index under rainfed (46%) as well as irrigated condition (52.6%). The cultivars ICC 13124 and ICC 867 maintained very low values of membrane injury index which are comparable to drought tolerant checks ICC 4958 and ICC 10448.
