ABSTRACT
In an attempt to find natural and cheaper methods for management of mustard aphid (Lipaphis erysimi Kalt.), locally available organic materials like cow urine+fermented butter milk, dashparni, agneyastra, crude extracts of Melia, Eupatorium, aqueous extracts of Polygonum hydropiper, Lantana, neem seed kernel and a commercial formulation of neem oil were evaluated against mustard aphid in two separate organically managed field experiments during 2012 and 2013 in Organic Farm of Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University, Palampur. Lipaphis erysimi is the major pest of Brassica crops and may cause up to 90% losses. Field populations were counted a day before and after 10 days of spray from 5 cm apical twig of five selected plants from each treatment. Aqueous leaf extract of P. hydropiper 10% was found to be significantly most effective with maximum efficacy of 71.45 and 92.56 % respectively in 2012 and 2013. Lowest count of 0.85 and 13.63 aphids/ plant were recorded respectively during the two years of study. In another field experiment replicated four times, efficacy of P. hydropiper was evaluated in comparison to two potential crude extracts each @ 0.5% of Melia and Eupatorium developed by NAIP Laboratory, Department of Entomology, CSK HPAU, Palampur along with neem oil and Lantana. All the formulations responded in the management of aphids over control but aqueous extract of P. hydropiper 10% and crude extract of Eupatorium were found to be better and significantly at par.
