ABSTRACT
Mulberry leaf quality is one of the key factors influencing the growth and development of silkworm, Bombyx mori L.. Since the production of good quality cocoons depend on providing good quality leaves to silkworm, the development of superior quality leaf has become one of the prime objective in mulberry breeding programme. In the present study, thirteen mulberry accessions were evaluated for qualitative studies through silkworm (Bombyx mori) rearing. Rearing performance was carried out by using silkworm hybrid PM×CSR2. When silkworms were reared on leaves of TB-21, significantly maximum mature larval weight (32.63 g/10 larvae), single cocoon weight (1.79 g), shell weight (0.36 g), shell ratio (19.98 %), silk productivity (3.97 cg/day) and silk filament length (823.65 m) were obtained followed by ME-27 and MI-79. Significantly maximum denier was recorded V-1 (2.94) followed by M. indica (2.93) and TB-21 (2.92). However, denier was significantly minimum when silkworms were reared on leaves of Srinagar local (2.79). Raw silk per cent was high when silkworms were fed with leaves of TB-21(14.94 %) followed by ME-27 (14.72 %) and MI-79 (14.71 %). However, it was significantly low when silkworms were fed with leaves of Srinagar local (13.78 %). Renditta was significantly low when silkworms were reared upon the leaves of TB-21(6.69) followed by ME-27 (6.79) while, it was significantly high when silkworms were fed with leaves of Srinagar local (7.26). Hence, the accessions viz., TB-21, ME-27 and MI-79 were found to be superior with respect to economic traits of silkworm.
