ABSTRACT
Traditionally, the tuberous roots of coleus and ashwagandha have been used as condiment. They are known for a number of medicinal properties; used in Traditional Ayurvedic School of medicines. The pharmaceutical industries are mainly dependent upon the wild population of these plants for the supply of tuberous roots for forskolin and withafarin extraction. Among the major constraints for growing these two crops, diseases like root rot and wilt complex caused by Fusarium and root-knot caused by Meloidogyne incognita. The field experiments conducted in the present investigation during 2013-14 revealed a significant increase in plant growth parameters, viz., plant height, shoot and root weight, tuber length, number of branches as well as tuber/root/berry yield per plant in coleus and ashwagandha treated with fluorescent pseudomonads (PGPR strains). In coleus highest root knot index (RKI) 2.20 was recorded in untreated control followed by FP10 (1.60) and lowest RKI was observed in FP50 (0.66) and FP31 (0.73). The lowest wilt complex incidence of 10 per cent was also recorded in FP50 followed by 13.33 per cent in FP31. Highest disease incidence of 28.33 per cent was recorded in untreated control. Similarly in ashwagandha also lowest RKI (0.75 and 0.80) was recorded in FP50 and FP 31 whereas highest RKI (3.06) and disease incidence of 31.60 was recorded in untreated control.
