ABSTRACT
A field experiment was conducted from 2011-12 to 2012-13 at Dryland Agricultural Research Station, Chettinad, Tamil Nadu to evaluate the promising oil yielding tree species and avenue tree species for dryland conditions. In the present investigation, five oil yielding tree species and five avenue tree species were studied for their feasibility in dry tract conditions. The silvicultural parameters viz., plant height, stem girth at collar region, middle and top portion and number of branches were taken into consideration. Among the tree borne oilseed species, Azadirachta indica (Neem) found to produce superior growth with respect to plant height and number of branches as compared with other species like Pongamia pinnata (Pungam), Calophyllum inophyllum (Pinnai) and Maduca longifolia (Iluppai). Whereas, among the avenue tree species, Delonix regia (Shield tree) was found to be better tree species in terms of morphological and other growth characters as compared with other tree species like Samanea saman (Rain tree), Peltaforum ferrugianum (Yellow gulmohar), Cassia fistula (Indian laburnum) and Thespesia populnea (Portia tree) in the rainfed alfisol conditions of Tamil Nadu.
