ABSTRACT
Six indigenous plants namely Balakat (Ziziphus talanai), Bikas (Eupatorium cordatum), Jatropha (Jathropa curcas), Makabuhay (Tinospora crispa L.), Neem (Azadirachta indica) and Pepper (Capsicum frutescens) were tested for their molluscicide properties neither as powder or water extract forms to combat Golden Apple Snails (GAS). Daily efficacy level of tested plants was studied to determine its toxicity for three days. A total of 26 treatments were laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Findings showed that five treatments significantly have the highest mortality rate namely: T15 - Bikas water extract 100 ml (100g/l) revealed significantly toxic in controlling GAS registering 100% mortality rate in day 1 followed by T12 - Makabuhay 50g powder, T13 - Balakat 25g powder, T14 - Balakat 50g powder, T15 - Bikas water extract 100 ml (100g/l) with 100% mortality rate in day 2. In day 3, the treatments that registered the following mortality rate are: T21 - Makabuhay water extract 100 ml (100g/l) and T22 - Makabuhay water extract 50 ml (100g/l) at 96.7%, then T17 - Jathropha water extract 100 ml (100g/l) at 93.3%. Results point out that toxicity level of indigenous plant materials either in powder or water extracts as molluscicides is effective in one to two days. Further, a more comprehensive state of the art method of extraction is necessary to maximize the said plants mulluscicide potential in order to reduce the volume requirement per hectare.
