ABSTRACT
The different fertility restoration behavior of 24 pollen parents on five CMS lines established the distinctness among the cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) sources and for each CMS line used, restorers and maintainers were identified. Screening of 120 hybrids obtained by 5 x 24, L x T design for fertility restoration revealed that all the 18 new inbreds and six known restorer lines (R lines) behaved as maintainers on CMS-300-2A cytoplasm with an exception of partial fertility for inbreds RHA-298(NB) and 6 D-1(NB). Contrastingly all the inbreds and restorers recovered complete fertility over PET-2-7-1A cytoplasm. The known restorer lines on classical CMS lines such as CMS-17-A, CMS-234-A and DSF-15-A behaved as restorers, while the behavior of new inbreds was varying among these CMS lines, where some behaved as either partial restorers or maintainers.
