ABSTRACT
Cotton is an important commercial crop in Telangana State. There was a wide range of variation in the management practices adopted by the farmers, in which, the best managed fields were receiving conjunctive application of organic and inorganic fertilizers, while poorly managed fields did not receive any organics and were generally dependent on the use of chemical fertilizers only. Some of the farmers used very low dose of P (6-8 kg P2O5 ha-1) and K (2-7 kg K2O ha-1) in Adilabad and Karimnagar districts and some of the farmers applied double the recommended dose of fertilizers (120: 60: 60: 50:10 Kg N, P, K, ZnSO4 and B /ha). Only a few farmers used micronutrients in Adilabad and Karimnagar districts. Only 1 per cent of the farmers used ZnSO4, while 7.5 per cent of the farmers used B and 2.5 per cent of the farmers used Mg in Adilabad, Karimnagar and Nizamabad districts respectively, as soil application. About 5 percent of farmers gone for foliar sprays twice during crop growth period and only 3.6 per cent of farmers used organic manures (FYM or sheep manure). The quantities of N, P, K fertilizers applied in the surveyed locations varied from 54 to 604 kg ha–1; 5 to 500 kg ha–1 and 2 to 225 kg ha,– in the three districts respectively. Mean nitrogen fertilizer use was highest (193 kg ha-1) in Adilabad district, and poshosphatic fertilizers (91 kg ha-1) and potassium fertilizer (88 kg ha-1) in Nizamabad district. The NPK ratios in the state averaged from 5 : 8.3 : 3.8 instead of 4:2:1. The average yields were on par with national average where ever the farmers are following integrated nutrient management practices along with application of micronutrients viz., Zn and B.
