ABSTRACT
Melon fruit production can be improved by increasing the fruit quality and yield with the study of gene actions and mode of inheritance of quantitative fruit traits. Generation mean analysis was carried out in infra-specific cross combination - (muskmelon x snap melon) using five generations i.e.; parents (P1, P2), F1, F2s, and F3s. The fruit traits viz.; number of fruits/plant, polar and equatorial circumference of fruit (cm), flesh thickness (cm), fruit weight (kg), total soluble solid (%), pedicel length (cm) and yield/plant (kg) were taken. Profound dominance effect was observed in traits like polar circumference of fruit, flesh thickness, pedicel length and fruit weight, while additive effect was prevalent in equatorial circumference of fruit, TSS, number of fruits/plant and yield/plant. Among the interaction effects dominance x dominance was predominant over additive x additive for all traits. Substantial amount of heterosis in desirable direction among important traits were observed in F2 followed by F3 progenies. Fruit flesh colour showed dominant and external striped epicarp showed recessive inheritance .
