ABSTRACT
Presence of wide genetic diversity among the genotypes was revealed by Mahalanobis D2 analysis. The genetic divergence was studied among a set of forty genotypes of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) for thirteen characters. The genotypes differed significantly for all the characters. By using D2 analysis, the forty genotypes were grouped into twelve clusters. The intra cluster D2 values ranged from nil (Clusters IV, V, VI, VII and VIII, IX, XII) to 217.61 (Cluster XI). The cluster XI had the maximum D2 value (217.61) followed by Cluster X (216.04), Cluster III (154.69), Cluster II (112.11) and Cluster I (87.67). Highest inter cluster generalized distance (4625.79) was between cluster XII and IX. Selection of parents from these diverse clusters for hybridization programme would help in achieving novel recombinants. It was observed that number of fruits per plant contributed maximum (25.13%) towards divergence followed by average fruit weight (13.85%), lycopene content (13.33%), fruit yield per plant (11.79%), beta carotene (10.13%), number of primary branches per plant (8.46%), ascorbic acid content (6.79), yield per hectare (4.62%), plant height (4.36%) and TSS (1.54%). The remaining characters viz., days to first flowering, days to 50 per cent flowering and days to fruit set did not contribute to the total divergence.
