ABSTRACT
Genetic divergence was assessed using Mahalanobis D2 statistic in 60 inbreds of maize for twelve characters at College of Agriculture, Rajendranagar, PJTSAU, Hyderabad. Sixty genotypes were grouped into nine clusters. Cluster II was the largest with 27 genotypes followed by cluster I (17 genotypes), cluster III (10 genotypes) and the clusters IV, V VI VII VIII and IX are solitary. The inter cluster distances were higher than the average intra cluster distances, which indicated wide diversity among the genotypes of different groups than those of the same cluster. The highest inter cluster values were observed between cluster IV and IX, followed by cluster III and IV and cluster V and IX indicating wide variability in genetic makeup of the genotypes included in these Clusters where as least inter Cluster D2 values were observed between the Cluster V and VI followed by Cluster VI and VIII and Cluster I and VII indicating the close relationship among genotypes included in these clusters. Maximum differences among the genotypes within the same cluster were shown by cluster II followed by cluster III and cluster I. The Clusters IV, V, VI, VII, VIII and IX contained only one genotype each and showed zero intra cluster distances. The Cluster III had highest mean value for grain yield per plant followed by Cluster VI, and Cluster V. Out of 12 characters studied, plant height (40.96%), grain yield per plant (18.19%) and ear height (16.65%) and days to 50% tasseling (13.27%) contributed high for genetic divergence. Based on the inter-cluster distances genotypes present in clusters III, IV, V and IX can be used as parents for hybridization programme to develop potential hybrids.
