ABSTRACT
Multivariate analysis using wilk's criterion was carried out to test the difference among fifty four niger genotypes. Grouping of the genotypes was carried-out by following Tocher's method. In all, eleven clusters were formed from fifty four genotypes. The cluster II was largest having 25 genotypes. Cluster I and cluster III was second largest which contained 10 and 7 genotypes respectively cluster V to XI also had 1 genotype. The analysis on contribution of various characters towards the expression of genetic divergence indicated that the characters viz., seed yield per plant, harvest index, oil content, seeds per capsule, plant height, capsules per plant, days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, 1000 seed weight and branches per plant contributed very much towards genetic divergence. The maximum inter-cluster distance was found between clusters I and IV carrying 10 and 5 genotypes followed by that clusters between IV and VI and IV and V. The cluster IV revealed maximum values for days to maturity, plant height, branches per plant, capsules per plant, seeds per capsule, 1000 seed weight, seed yield per plant and harvest index. The cluster VI had high mean values for oil content. The cluster XI revealed maximum values for days to 50 per cent flowering are suggested as parents for hybridization programme to achieve novel recombinants.
