ABSTRACT
Genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance and genetic advance as a per cent over mean for seventeen characters were assessed by field evaluation of twenty eight brinjal genotypes at Department of Vegetable Science, College of Horticulture, Mudigere (Karnataka) during 2014. High degree of variation was observed for all the characters. The phenotypic coefficient of variation was higher than genotypic coefficient of variation for all the characters. The high estimates of heritability was observed for number of primary branches (75.40 %), stem girth (64.10 %), plant spread from north to south (63.93 %), leaf area (88.41 %), days to flowering (72.98 %), days to fifty per cent flowering (71.21 %), number o flowers per cluster (81.70 %), number of clusters per plant (82.62 %), number of fruits per cluster (85.37 %), fruit diameter (80.42 %), fruit length (74.31 %), days to picking (86.30 %), yield per plant (69.32 %) and yield per plot (78.26 %). Higher estimates of heritability coupled with high genetic advance as per cent over mean was observed for all the traits except for plant height, plant spread from east to west and pedicel length.
