ABSTRACT
Phenotypic stability of the 20 promising rice genotypes along with two checks viz., Khitish and Satabdi were estimated over four environments. These were evaluated at two different agro climatic zones with two seasons of Wes Bengal, India, viz., Instructional Farm Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Jaguli, Nadia and Regional Research Station, New Alluvial Zone (NAZ), Chakdaha, Nadia, West Bengal during the kharif and Boro 2008-09 and 2009-10. The mean squares due to genotypes, environments and Genotype x environment were found highly significant against all the characters. The linear component of interaction was significant for all the characters except panicle length and grain number panicle-1 while non-linear component of G x E interaction was significant against all the characters. The magnitude of linear variance was significantly high against non-linear variance for panicle number plant-1, grain length and 1000 grain weight. BM-1, BM-14 and BM-17 recorded very high grain yield and stable for grain yield and most of the component characters e.g. BM-1 was stable for days to 50% flowering, plant height, panicle number plant-1, panicle weight, grain number panicle-1 and 1000 grain weight, they also had high regression coefficient for grain yield. BM-6, BM-9 and BM-18 were also stable for grain yield and for most of the component characters. But they had poor grain yield and below average regression coefficient. The check varieties, Khitish and Satabdi were also stable for grain yield & for number of component characters. Their grain yield performance was nearly equal to population mean performance.
