ABSTRACT
Poor germination is one of the major culprits responsible for lower than potential green forage yield. A study was therefore conducted to evaluate the effects of different seed priming techniques on green fodder yield and quality of fodder maize under middle Gujarat condition. Seed priming is a treatment to improve seed quality and plant growth upon germination and is applied widely to crop species to improve uniformity and yield. Three-year experiments were conducted at Main Forage Research Station, Anand Agricultural University, Anand during 2017 to 2019 with the aim of effects of seed priming on green fodder yield and quality of forage maize. The experiment was laid out in Randomized block design having three replications. Experiment results revealed that response of seed priming found non-significant on plant population. Seed priming done with ZnSO4 @ 0.5 % for 12 hrs. reported significantly higher plant height, number of leaves per plant, higher germination percentage and crude protein yield and significantly the highest green fodder yield and dry matter yield. Dry matter content was higher in treatment seed priming with ZnSO4 @ 0.5 % for 6 hrs. Crude protein content was higher in two treatment viz. Seed priming with KH2PO4 @ 0.5% for 6 hrs. and no priming treatment. Minimum NDF content was reported in seed priming with KH2PO4 @ 0.5% for 6 hrs
