ABSTRACT
A study was undertaken to estimate heterosis in F1 hybrids of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) with respect to growth and quality parameters using 18 hybrids. The hybrids and their parents were evaluated to assess the combining ability governing the quality traits. Among the crosses, KC-4 x DL exhibited significant positive heterosis over commercial check for vine length and the cross KC-5 x KML exhibited significant positive heterosis for number of leaves per vine. For flesh thickness, KC-3 x Poinsette exhibited maximum positive and significant heterosis over commercial check and this was in desirable direction. The parents KC-5 and KC-3 were identified as good general combiners for number of leaves per plant, whereas KC-2 and KC-6 were identified as good general combiners for number of branches. The crosses KC-3 x Poinsette and KC-5 x KML exhibited significant sca effects for flesh thickness and number of seeds per fruit, respectively. Non-additive component of genetic variance is predominant for all the characters.
