ABSTRACT
The results obtained in the present investigation on tomato showed that the magnitude of heterosis differed considerably for traits and crosses as well. The heterosis over better parent and standard check were moderately high in both positive and negative directions depending upon the nature of the cross as well as the characters studied. Heterosis over the better parent ranged from -42.39% (for plant height) to 33.48 (plant height) and over standard check ranged from -42.06% (for number of fruits/cluster) to 33.48 (plant height). It was also observed that most of the crosses showed significant positive and negative heterosis over better parent and standard check for almost all the characters studied. Best heterotic combination, for plant height was H-24 × Sel-7, for number of primary branches/plant was Kashi Amrit × Azad T-5, for days to 50% flowering was Fla 7171 × Sel-7, for days to first fruit set was Pant T-3 × Sel-7, for number of fruits per cluster was CO-3 × Kashi Sharad, for fruit length, fruit width, fruit weight and fruit yield was Fla 7171 × Sel-7.
