ABSTRACT
Six parents of ash gourd (Benincasa hispida) were selected based on their performance and were crossed in a diallel mating system to generate 30 F1 hybrids. These hybrids along with the parents were grown to study heterosis in 15 yield related characters. Highly significant and positive standard heterosis for individual fruit weight was exhibited in Indu x Vasundhara (89.30 percent) followed by Indu x Ottanchathiram local (57.46 percent) and Karaikal local x Vasundhara (50.28 percent). The maximum standard heterotic expression of 60.40 percent yield per vine was observed in Indu x Vasundhara, followed by Ottanchathiram local x KAU local (45.45 percent) and Indu x Ottanchathiram local (40.72 percent) these hybrids can be better utilized for crop improvement in commercial cultivation of ash gourd.
