ABSTRACT
The study on 15-year-old trees of “Starking Delicious” apple was conducted in different orchards in Himachal Pradesh during 2013 and 2014, with five uniform trees from each location in RBD factorial design. The result revealed that fruit length, fruit diameter and fruit shape index were greater at Kalpa and Reckong-Peo, howerver, fruits from both the sites of Kotkhai were inferior in respect of these attributes. Fruit TSS, TSS/ acid ratio, sugar contents were found significantly higher at both the locations (2500 and 2700m msl) of district Kinnaur and Mashobra ( 2200m msl) in Shimla whereas, these fruit quality attributes were recorded lower at both the locations of Kotkhai. Titratable acidity was found lower in fruits from Kalpa and Reckong-Peo and higher at lower as well as higher altitude of Kotkhai. The different altitudes showed significantly positive correlation with yield, fruit length, fruit breadth, fruit weight, TSS, total sugar, reducing sugar, non-reducing sugar and TSS/acidity ratio whereas, negative and significant association between altitudes and per cent acidity was found in both year of study. The length/breadth ratio showed positive correlation in first year while in second year it showed negative and non-significant association. The length/breadth ratio showed positive and significant correlation in first year while in second year it showed negative and non-significant association with different altitudes. These findings suggested that elevation exerted a direct impact on the overall fruit quality of apple, which was significantly superior at Kalpa and Reckong-Peo and inferior at the lower altitude of Kotkhai.
