ABSTRACT
The distribution of lead (Pb) among various fractions may prove an essential tool to know its availability to plants and for phytoremediation. Therefore, we conducted a screen house (open air green house with natural environmental condition) experiment with Brassica juncea grown on artificially spiked soil (200 µg Pb g-1) to study the effect of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost (VC) and microbial inoculants (Azotobacter sp. and Pseudomonas sp.) on distribution of Pb in various fractions. A sequential extraction procedure (SEP) was used that fractionated Pb into exchangeable (EX), carbonates-bound (CARB), organically bound (OM), Mn-oxides bound (MnOX), amorphous Fe-oxides bound (AFeOX), crystalline Fe-oxides bound (CFeOX) and residual (RES) forms. The SEP showed that EDTA caused significant increase in the exchangeable fraction of Pb with a consequent decrease in CARB, OM, MnOX, AFeOX and CFeOX bound fractions. The maximum exchangeable fraction was (27.50%) found in the EDTA-treated soil. Application of bioinoculants increased OM bound Pb and AFeOX fractions either alone or in combination with FYM and VC. The FYM and VC were helpful in increasing OM bound and MnOX fractions.
