ABSTRACT
The quality and quantity of silk produced are highly related with the care taken during rearing, spinning and type of mountages used for spinning. Evaluation of different mountages in the laboratory revealed that rotary mountage is the best, as the cocoons harvested with rotary mountage were of high quality. Because of encouraging results in the laboratory, rotary mountages were tested with selected farmers of Chitradurga and Bellary districts of Karnataka state. The data revealed that reduction in defective and melted cocoons (5.6 & 4.3% respectively) and increase in average filament length (1185 m) in rotary mountage when compared to chandrike (21.5%, 12.8% & 890m respectively). Renditta was brought down to 5.3% in rotary mountage as against 7.1% in chandrikae. Reelability was improved (89.3%) and cocoon fetched higher price (` 243/kg) compared to that mounted in chandrikae (80% & ` 218/kg respectively).
