Influence of biparental mating on genetic variability, correlation and path analysis in mustard

ABSTRACT
Biparental mating was attempted in the F2 of four crosses of mustard namely Kranti × ACN-9, Seeta × Ashirwad, Bio-902 × Ashirwad, Vardhan × Kranti during rabi 2013-14 in RBD with three replication. This study revealed the presence of considerable amount of variance in BIP progenies. The maximum range was recorded in number of siliqua plant-1(117.8,117.03, 108.46 and 111.14) followed by plant height (35.53, 38.53, 37.13 and 38.8), days to maturity (7.4,5.73, 5.13 and 19.93) days to first flower (7.27, 4.67, 5.87, and 8.46) and seed yield plant-1 (4.6, 7.27, 5.02, and 6.97) in the four crosses Kranti × ACN-9, Seeta × Ashirwad, Bio-902 × Ashirwad, Vardhan × Kranti respectively. Upper limit value of BIP progenies for days to first flower, plant height, number of primary branches plant-1, number of siliqua plant-1 and seed yield plant-1 were found to be higher than best check varieties for respective characters. GCV (%) and PCV (%) were either high or moderate for number of siliqua yield plant-1 and seed yield plant-1 which can allow more scope for selecting better segregants. Low narrow sense heritability estimate were coupled with low genetic advance as per cent mean for number of siliqua plant-1 and seed yield plant-1 in all four crosses. Positive significant correlation of seed yield plant-1 was recorded with number of siliqua plant-1 and plant height in all four crosses and also with number of primary branches plant-1 in three crosses except BIO-902 × Ashirwad. In three crosses Kranti × ACN-9, Seeta × Ashirwad, Vardhan × Kranti relationship between early maturity and seed yield plant-1 was broken and changed to negative correlation. Path coefficient analysis revealed that direct effect of number of siliqua plant-1 towards seed yield plant-1 was higher in BIP of all four crosses.
