ABSTRACT
This present investigation was carried out at the Horticulture Farm, Rajasthan College of Agriculture (MPUAT) Udaipur during the year 2014. In this experiment, papaya seeds were sown in to different growing media in polybags (C1) and protrays (C2) containers and study their effect on growth and development of papaya seedling. The results indicated that the medium treatment M7 i.e. Soil + FYM + Sand + Cocopeat + Vermicompost (1:1:1:1:1) had given significantly better result among different combinations. Under this treatment least days required for germination initiation (8.60), maximum height of seedling (13.70 cm), number of leaves per seedling (10.88), leaf area (33.72 cm2), fresh weight (4.23 g) and dry weight (0.46 g) were recorded significantly superior over other treatments used. Further it was also found superior with relation to diameter of primary root (2.41 mm) seedling vigour index I (2105.21) and root/shoot ratio (0.16) and among the containers polybags was superior over to protrays container in terms of height of seedling (12.30 cm), no. of leaves per seedling (10.92), leaf area (28.65 cm2), fresh weight (3.88g), dry weight (0.43 g), diameter of primary root (2.45 mm), seedling vigour index (1683.52) and root and shoot ratio (0.14).
