ABSTRACT
A field experiment was conducted at Millet Breeding Station Farm of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore during the monsoon seasons of 2006-07 and 2007-08 to study the effect of weed management practices viz., chemical and cultural methods on weed dynamics and growth and productivity of finger millet under rainfed conditions. The results revealed that lower weed population and dry matter were recorded under one inter cultivation on 15 days after sowing (DAS) and two hand weedings on 30 and 45 DAS. This treatment gave higher grain and straw yield when compared to other treatments. Pre-emergence isoproturon as spray at 0.5 kg ai ha-1 + post – emergence 2,4-D Na salt at 0.75 kg ha-1 on 15 DAS and one intercultivation on 30 DAS gave weed less population and dry matter of the major weed flora Trianthema portulacastrum and total weeds. Higher weed control efficiency with increased net return and B: C ratio were higher under this treatment due to less labour cost and selective control of the weed.
