ABSTRACT
Studies have shown that plant growth regulators particularly gibberellic acid and benzyl adenine can be used as postharvest treatment for maintaining the quality of bitter gourd fruits under ambient conditions (19-21°C and 46-60% relative humidity) of storage after packing in perforated (2%) LDPE bags (30 cm x 25cm) of 25 and 50 micron thickness respectively. The application of plant growth regulators markedly influenced the storage behaviour of bitter gourd with maintenance of appearance quality of fruits and minimizing physiological weight loss when compared with untreated control fruits. The study revealed that gibberellic acid and benzyl adenine can preserve the valuable attributes of post harvest quality by its effect on inhibition of senescence and maintenance of green colour which is due to presence of higher amounts of chlorophyll pigments in gibberellic acid treated fruits as compared with benzyl adenine. There were seven treatments including control, replicated five times and the experiment was laid out in completely randomized design.
