Input use pattern in organic farming systems in Gadag district of Karnataka : A key mechanism for achieve sustainable growth in organic agriculture

ABSTRACT
The present paper aims to analyze the input use pattern in major three organic farming systems of Gadag district in Karnataka state. The study results revealed that, in case of organic farming system-I, the utilization of vermicompost was found to be maximum in sorghum cultivation. In case of labour inputs used, the quantity of human labour used were more (115.40 man days) in dairy component followed by sorghum and greengram. However, in organic farming system-II, it shows that, the values of bio-pesticides and bio-fertilizers for groundnut were ` 852.66 and ` 467.50 respectively and that for maize were ` 804.19 & ` 538.41. Further, the human labour, bullock labour and machine labour were the main labour inputs used in organic farming system-II. However, in case of organic farming-III results shows that, the mango plantation was found to be one of the major crop enterprise followed in this system. The quantity of compost, biopesticides, bio-digester liquids and biofertiliers used in this enterprise were 1.5 ton, 0.12 lit., 190.57 lit. and 0.12 kg respectively. The quantity of human labour used in dairy component was higher (117.30 man days) when compared to groundnut (55.77 man days) and maize (50.43 man days). Hence, the outcome of the study indicates that management of on farm resources for agriculture to satisfy changing human needs while enhancing the quality of environment and conserving natural resources which will boost the production with improving soil health in long run.
