ABSTRACT
This paper identifies existing major livelihoods adopted by households such as farming, dairy, off farm and non-farm options in north of and south of Bengaluru across three rural urban gradients viz., rural, transition and urban. Across the gradients of urbanization and in both transects, family size and composition showed that large family percentage ranged from 15 percent to 25 percent. The major livelihood option in rural belt was farming, and the next source of livelihood was dairying. In north of Bengaluru, farm wage employment contributed 23.33 and 28.33 percent in rural and transition area and the same was 53.33 per cent in urban area of the same transect. Livelihood options in south of Bengaluru mainly include crop production 88.33 percent in rural, followed by 85.00 percent households in transition belt. The next in line livelihood option was farm wage employment to about 41.67 percent 30.00 per cent in rural and transition areas, in that order.
