ABSTRACT
To enhance soil productivity in rice-wheat system of the Indo-Gangetic Plains, conservation agriculture based management practices might be better option for sustainability in crop production. Therefore, a study was conducted at the field of Department of Soil Science, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana to evaluate the long-term effect of rice cultivation methods, tillage and rice straw on chemical properties and enzyme activity at 0-15 cm soil depth. The treatments comprised of four main plots of rice cultivation methods (zero till direct seeding, conventional till direct seeding, transplanting without puddling and transplanting with puddling) and three subplots in wheat (conventional till, zero till without rice straw and zero till with rice straw as mulch) with three replications in split plot design. The study reveals that zero till wheat with rice straw as mulch significantly improve soil organic carbon, available phosphorous, potassium and DTPA extractable micronutrient cations (Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu) in soil. Similarly, enzymatic (alkaline phosphatase, dehydrogenase, urease, phytase, fluorescein di-acetate and phytan-P) activities were significantly higher under zero tillage with rice straw as mulch then other treatments. However a long-term study is required for better understanding of changes related to rice cultivation, tillage and rice straw management in rice-wheat system.
