ABSTRACT
The present study on biological properties of the soils viz. microbial population and enzyme activity were estimated in two sets of soils at different periods. One set of soil samples representing various salinity levels were collected during last week of June 2014 (pre-monsoon). The other set of samples were collected in chickpea fields (post-monsoon) grown at various salinity levels at flowering and harvest stages of the crop. The results showed that the microbial populations viz., bacteria population in 105 is 103.0, 88.0, 79.0 and 65.8, fungi population observed in 103 dilution were 9.4,4.2,1.6 and 0.8 and actinomycetes population in 104 is 108.6,88.8,75.8 and 67.8 were observed as well as enzyme activity like dehydrogenase was found to decline in i.e 51.8µg , 41.0µg, 45.4µg and 28.0µg and Phosphatase was 20.8µg, 16.4 µg, 10.5 µg and 5.0 µg in respective EC range with increasing level of salinity appeared to be associated with change in osmatic potential of soil due to higher salt concentrations and salting effect of soluble salts on enzymes protein and growth of microbes. Further the biological activity was maximum at flowering than at harvest in chickpea.
