ABSTRACT
In a field experiment, seven nitrogen levels (Control N0, N @ 10 kg ha-1, N20, N30, N40, N50 and N60) and three inoculation levels (Control I0, Azo1, Azo2 viz. uninoculated, Azo-SBT 72 and Azo-SUW 82 strains) were studied for change in soil microbial population under finger millet. Change in microbial count studied at two stages 45 and 95 DAS. Study showed that Azotobacter population decreased with nitrogen levels. However, total bacterial and fungal count increased with applied nitrogen levels. Inoculated Azo2 strain significantly increased Azotobacter, total bacterial and fungal count in comparison to control at both stages. The split fertilizer dose of N at 30 days most likely disturbed Azotobacter population at 45 DAS thus Azotobacter declined with increased N levels. At 95 DAS, maximum Azotobacter count was recorded by application of 40 kg N ha-1 then it declined significantly with 60 kg N ha-1.
