ABSTRACT
Millets being a rich nutrient source the consumption of very less compare to rice and wheat. Above that many advantages in cultivating the millets, as they are climate resilient crop, require less water, adopt to harshly condition. Among millets in India bajra being cultivated in larger area (7.3 mha) then followed by jowar, ragi and small millets. The area under cultivation is significantly decreasing over the decade in all millets, but productivity shown marginally increased growth in 2000s. This is mainly due to new improved varieties release in the period. Millets witnessed higher instability in area, production and yield compare to rice and wheat. The reason for decline in consumption of millets due to easy availability of rice and wheat through PDS, treating millets as inferior to other cereals and these millets were replaced by fine diet. So efforts are needed to create awareness and also to increase the productivity through substantial R&D investment.
