ABSTRACT
Physico-chemical and soil fertility status of surface soils (0-30 cm) was studied in 250 representative samples from Arecanut growing taluks of Shimoga and Chickmagalore Districts. The study revealed that the majority of the soils were medium to highly acidic with non-saline nature, high in organic carbon content. The available nitrogen and potassium status were medium and available phosphorus status was low. The exchangeable calcium and magnesium contents varied from 1.60 to 5.30 cmol (p+) kg-1 and 0.30 to 3.30 cmol (p+) kg-1 respectively. The available sulphur ranged from 4.60 to 22.50 ppm. The soils were high in micronutrients, viz., iron, manganese and copper. Zinc content was in the range of 0.16 to 3.72 ppm.
