ABSTRACT
Concept of organic plant breeding is relatively new and less developed than the conventional breeding. The maintenance of integrity and wholeness in the production system is realised to be important component of organic agriculture. If the integrity of an organic production system is to be maintained, the plant material used to initiate production should have the organic origin. The concept of organic plant breeding was evolved and popularised mainly to fulfil the needs of organic agriculture by breeding adapted varieties to the specific environment. This review reveals a short insight into the principles of organic breeding and its need in maintaining integrity of production systems. The different levels of integrity, organic plant breeder should take care to breed varieties for organic ecosystem. It also covers the breeding and selection techniques which are compatible with organic agriculture by maintaining plant integrity.
