ABSTRACT
In our investigation to exploit the opposite heterotic groups and to know the path of productivity of upper half mean length, potential heterotic boxes involving elite combiners were generated by crossing 20 lines and 4 testers which were diverse resulting in 80 single cross . The per se deviations of the selected top and bottom crosses from the overall group mean for each trait indicating the different paths of productivity would mean that they are carrying different alleles for the trait considered. Among the top ten hybrids selected based on the upper half mean length; plant height, ginning outturn, seed index, lint index, upper half mean length, uniformity ratio, fibre strength and elongation ratio exhibited positive contribution towards upper half mean while, other traits were contributing negatively towards upper half mean length. By comparison of both top and bottom crosses we can predict that there is a modified path of productivity for superiority and inferiority of genotypes.
