ABSTRACT
The whitefly harbors many secondary endosymbionts viz., Rickettsia, Wolbachia and Arsenophonus which act as supplement to nutritionally imbalanced diet to the insect. In an attempt to study the occurrence of these endosymbionts in the whitefly, sample naturally occurring on cassava and other crop of cassava cropping system were collected from Coimbatore district and analyzed with the specific primers. These primers targeting the specific genes viz., 16S rRNA (Rickettsia), 16S rDNA (Wolbachia) and 16S-23S rDNA (Arsenophonus). These endosymbionts tested in the whiteflies, Rickettsia was present in whiteflies that were collected from tomato while Wolbachia and Arsenophonus were present in whiteflies collected from cassava and sunflower. On the other hand only Wolbachia was recorded on the cotton whitefly population. This preliminary study indicates the possibility of variation prevailing among the whiteflies populations of various crops in Tamil Nadu.
