ABSTRACT
To study the performance of eleven radish (Raphanus sativus L.) varieties an experiment was carried out at experimental farm of U.B. Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Pundibari, Cooch Behar, West Bengal during the rabi season of 2009-10 and 2010-11. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. Data revealed that the performance of different genotypes varied significantly with respect to growth, yield and quality parameters. Among the different varieties maximum root length was recorded in Japanese White (16.54 cm) which was statistically at par with Long Chetki (16.40 cm) and Pusa Desi (15.77 cm). The highest root diameter was observed in Long Chetki (4.92 cm), followed by Early Long White (4.75 cm), variety Chinese Pink (4.55 cm) and Arka Nishant (4.54 cm). The significantly highest root yield was recorded in Long Chetki (29.31 tonnes/ha) followed by Pusa Desi (27.29 tonnes/ha), Early Long White (25.73 tonnes/ ha), Arka Nishant (24.97 tonnes/ha) and Pusa chetki (24.46 tonnes/ha). Whereas, control variety Chine Pink, produced a root yield of 20.64 tonnes/ha. The highest ascorbic acid was recorded in Pusa Chetki (16.23 mg/100 g fresh) followed by Long Chetki (14.76 mg/100g fresh), Pusa Desi (13.32 mg/100g fresh). Considering the root yield and quality parameters, Long Chetki, Pusa Desi, Early Long White and Arka Nishant may be cultivated instead of control variety Chinese Pink and Japanese white. There was a wide range of variability for all the characters providing an ample scope for selecting desirable types. High heritability estimates coupled with high expected GA as % of mean were observed in case of individual root weight, ascorbic acid and yield. So, these characters could be considered as reliable selection indices and selection on the basis of these characters might be rewarding.
