ABSTRACT
Guava is the fourth most important fruit in terms of area and production after banana, mango and citrus. The traditional harvesting method (manual picking) of guava fruit is a labor intensive, tedious, time consuming as well as risk involved process. Therefore, it was necessary to develop a device that should be simple, power operated, easy to assemble and disassemble, low cost and light in weight with a proper balance. Considering this facts, a battery powered harvesting device with rotating circular serrated blade cutting mechanism was developed and compared with the manual picking. The harvesting capacities of the developed device and manual picking above 1.5 m plant height were found to be 44.124 kg/h & 34.110 kg/h and 45.426 kg/h & 46.117 kg/h up to 1.5 m plant height respectively. The harvesting losses of the developed device and manual picking were found to be 5.61 % & 7.52 % for above 1.5 m and 4.73 % & 4.62 % up to 1.5 m plant height respectively. The harvesting efficiency of the developed device and manual picking were found to be 90.63 % & 71.04 % for above 1.5 m and 90.79 % & 91.06 % up to 1.5 m plant height respectively. The harvesting cost of the developed device and manual picking were found to be 0.61 ?/kg & 0.74 ?/kg for above 1.5 m and 0.59 ?/kg & 0.55 ?/kg up to 1.5 m level of plant height respectively.
