ABSTRACT
The Konkan coast has a rich variety of fish. Ghol, Wagli, Wam, Pomfret, Shingala, Ravas, Karel, Tambusa, Dori, Chand, Surmai, Bangda, Palu and Bombay Duck, Ribbon fish / Bala (Trichiurus lepturus), Golden anchovies/ Mandeli (Coilia dussumieri), Croker / Dhoma (Johnius dussumieri), Prawns / Kolambi (Penaeus monodon), Paplet (Pampus argenteus), Surmai (Scomberomorus guttatus)are various types of fish available in Konkan Coast. Varieties of locally available fish viz., Dhoma, Bangda were selected for performance evaluation of solar tunnel dryer. These selected fish treated with salt and without salt before drying in solar tunnel dryer and open sun drying. Drying rate was higher in solar tunnel dryer compared to open sun drying due to higher temperature (550C) attained. Time required to reach safe moisture content was observed. Drying time required for salted fishes were more compared to unsalted fish. For considering fishes on upper tray in solar tunnel dryer, Fish variety Dhoma with salt treatment required 35 hours and unsalted treatment required 32 hours, similarly for fish variety Bangda with salted treatment required 37 hours and unsalted treatment required 34 hours.
