ABSTRACT
A field experiment was conducted at Farmers Training Center in Ucha Kebele, East Wollega Zone of Ethiopia from August, 2019 to December 2019 cropping season under rain-fed conditions through identifying high yielding variety and determining optimal seed rate. The experiment was laid out using Randomized complete block design with three replications in factorial arrangement of four different seed rates (100,125,150 and 175 kg ha-1) and four improved durum wheat varieties (Denbi, Donmateo, Alemtena and Tesfaye). Thousand seed weight of durum wheat was significantly influenced by main effect of varieties and seed rates. Dry biomass yield, mean number of seeds per spike, grain yield, and harvest index of durum wheat were significantly affected by varieties, seed rate and their interactions. Effective tiller number and spikelet per spike of durum wheat was significantly affected by seed rate. Highest total tiller number(2.01), effective tiller number(1.61),spikelet per spike (15.53),seeds per spike (52.66) and thousand seed weight (37.24g) of durum wheat were recorded from 100 kg ha-1seed rate whereas the highest dry biomass yield (8.87 t ha-1)were obtained from 175kg ha-1 seed rate. Highest grain yield (3.03 t ha-1), seeds per spike (48.5), and harvest index (38.17%)were recorded for variety Denbi whereas Donmateo variety recorded highest spike length (5.66cm), number of total tiller (1.85), thousand seed weight (38.35g),dry biomass yield (8.41 t ha-1). Highest average grain yield (3.43 and 3.26 t ha-1 was harvested from Denbi variety at a seed rate of 150 and 125kg ha-1, respectively. Denbi variety with a seed rates of 150 and 125 kg ha-1 gave a maximum net profit of ETB 45030 and 42500 ha-1 and marginal rate of return of 562 and 1971%, respectively. Hence, variety Denbi at a seed rate of 150 and 125 kg ha-1 could be suggested for production in Haro Limu district.
