ABSTRACT
A field study was carried out in the experimental plot of All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Palms (OUAT) at Bhubaneswar to evaluate the performance of different local germplasm of coconut of Odisha viz., Local Giant, Tinisera, Goja, Dhila, Bana, Chaka, Goal, Narangi, Surya Bana, Jahaji and Dhanei. The experimental palms were planted during December 2003 with a spacing of 7.5m x 7.5m. Among different local germplasm, Local Giant exhibited its superiority over other genotypes exhibiting maximum number of leaves per palm (29.60), number of leaves/palm/yr (12.84), number of inflorescence/palm/yr (11.87), number of female flowers/bunch (20.11) and number of nuts/palm/yr (62.12). The genotype Local Giant also proved its merit over other genotypes by producing fruits with maximum volume of water (191 ml), copra content (135.80 gm), TSS (7.44oBrix), total sugar (6.41 %), ascorbic acid content (7.12 mg/100ml) and potassium content (1920 ppm). The genotype Dhanei produced fruit with lowest acidity (0.052 %) and maximum sodium content (35.19 ppm) in nut water. Due to higher nut yield, copra content and better quality, the germplasm Local Giant was found most suitable for cultivation in Odisha.
