Performance of soybean [Glycine max L. (M.)] influenced by strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum inoculation and phosphorus fertilizer rates on phosphorus uptake efficiency, nodulation and yield in Ethiopia

ABSTRACT
This research experiment was carried out to study the effect of Bradyrhizobium japonicum strains and phosphorus rates on nodulation, phosphorus uptake efficiency, yield, yield components, and quality in order to maximize soybean production and productivity in Bako. Treatments included a factorial combinations of four Bradyrhizobium japonicum strains with un-inoculated, (Soybean murodk, Soybean 12 and Soybean MAR-1495) and four phosphorus levels (0, 23, 46 and 69 kg P2O5 ha-1) which were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Results of research revealed that inoculated soybean seeds with soybean 12 strain resulted in maximum nodule fresh weight (2.42 gm plant-1). However highest percent of seed oil content (20.37 % plant-1) was registered with inoculation of soybean murodk and soybean MAR-1495. Application of 69 kg P2O5 ha-1 gave the highest nodules volume (3.32 ml plant-1) and nodule fresh weight (2.83 gm plant-1). Interaction of phosphorus and B. japonicum inoculation, revealed that application of 46 kg P2O5 ha-1 with Soybean 12 inoculation significantly resulted in the highest number of nodules per plant (59.7), number of effective nodules (59.66), seed yield (3597 kg ha-1) and phosphorus uptake efficiency (19.86 kg ha-1). On the other hand, interaction of phosphorus and Bradyrhizobium inoculation, revealed that application of 69 kg P2O5 ha-1 with Soybean 12 inoculation significantly resulted in maximum pods per plant (86.1), straw yield (4651 kg ha-1) and percent crude protein (38.79 % plant-1). Phosphorus rates 69 kg P2O5 ha-1 with soybean murodk inoculation significantly increased available phosphorus (18 % plot-1). Maximum net benefit (51,709.15 ETBirr ha-1) and MRR (764.4%) were recorded from the combination of 46 kg P2O5 ha-1 and soybean 12 strain. Hence, application of 46 kg P2O5 ha-1 with Soybean 12 inoculations proved to be superior in seed yield as well as profitability and could be recommended for Bako area and similar agro-climatic conditions.
